7 Tips for Caring and Storing Your Wig

Wigs are a huge investment that require your tender loving care. You have to protect your investment by doing proper maintenance which isn’t too taxing on your everyday life. Caring for your wig is not only going to keep your hair looking fabulous, but it will increase the lifespan. You can care for your wig by first learning how to store it the right way. Today, we cover essential tips for caring and storing your wig.

Use Conditioner

Before you store your wig, clean and condition it to keep it fresh. Use a wig-safe shampoo first to clean your wig followed by conditioning which will keep it subtle. Rub a small amount of conditioner in the wig and gently work it through the hair downwards. Start from the center and work your way down to the ends.

Keep Dry

Your wig needs to be bone dry before you even think about storing it. Any kind of moisture or dampness leads to mold over long periods of time. Drying your wig is still pretty simple though. Just use a blow dryer along with a heat protectant to protect the wig from damage.

Sunlight

Keep your wig away from direct sunlight at all times. The sun rays cause damage over time and fade any coloring. When the wig takes damage from the sun, it looks dull and unpleasant. When your wig is in storage, keep it somewhere dim or dark so the color remains.

Styling Tools

Use styling tools that are absolutely made for wigs. For example, you could use a wig cap which is more comfortable. The wig cap also secures your hair and prevents any breakage from happening. Never use a regular brush on a wig. Instead, use a special wig brush which is more gentle.

Wet Care

When your wig is wet, be as cautious as possible. Don’t put your wig on a styling head while it’s wet because it may stretch. Additionally refrain from touching or brushing the wig because it may cause friction or breaking. When the wig is wet, air dry it by hanging it loosely on a stand so it doesn’t lose shape.
